Q&A
What compelled you to work in ceramics? When did you begin?
I took my first course in 2017 — I had been working in production and artist management within the photography industry and was itching to explore something different. I started on the wheel until 2021 when I took my first hand-building course.
What brings you joy about your practice?
What brings me most joy about my practice is the element of surrender. When I started hand-building, I witnessed a shift in my nervous system and an ease in finding my creative flow. My pieces often take on a life of their own and I surrender to that and feel connected to something greater than myself.
Is anything inspiring you lately?
I’m heavily inspired by the natural world, especially the ocean — I like to channel aquatic elements into my work. A few of my favorite artists that I’m consistently inspired by are Ruth Asawa, Anni Albers, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Toshiko Takaezu.
Where do you find beauty in nature?
I find beauty in the subtleties of nature — the in-between moments that might easily go unnoticed. The way petals of a flower lightly dance just as a breeze passes through, the remanence of a wave left behind in the ripples of the sand, the warm afternoon light that cuts through the leaves of an oak tree. These are some of the moments that continue to inspire me and connect me to something greater than myself.
